Did You Know ?

  • We here at Todae regularly take on eco challenges, and now Todae is challenging you with the “Todae Monthly Eco-Challenge" to learn how to be more eco-friendly and sustainable in our daily lives. To find out more about this months challenge click here.

  • We are looking for product testers! Help us choose the best eco stuff for you by sampling and testing some of our products. Receive, test and tell! It’s that easy! If you haven’t got in touch yet, contact us at thoughts@todae.com.au

  • Did you know how much water is used to make everyday things? It takes 1.3 million litres to produce one tonne of aluminium, and 4 litres to produce a bottle of beer. Find more examples below.

It takes this much water to:

  • 500 litres to produce one orange
  • 1.3 million litres to produce one tonne of aluminium
  • 50 litres to produce a copy of Saturday's newspaper
  • 4 litres to produce a bottle of beer
  • 5000 litres to produce one kilo of rice

Eco Hints:

  • One of the easiest ways to save energy this winter, is to make sure your house is well insulated. Hold a kindled stick of incense next to doors and windows to find out where air is escaping and entering. You can then easily fill these gaps with some of these effective Insulation Materials, and it should only require less than two hours of your time.

  • An incredible 800 million nappies are used in Australia each year, and these may take up to 500 years to break down in the landfill. Check out our range of biodegradable nappies; they are 70% biodegradable, oxygen bleached and much safer for your baby and the environment. Better still, use an Organic Cloth nappy. Reusable, washable and made from organic cotton, they are a healthier alternative to disposables.

  • We put more chemicals in our hair than anywhere else on our bodies. Shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, gels, the list goes on and on. Hair is extremely absorbent, and all the chemicals you put on your hair eventually make their way into your body. Avoid hair products with formaldehyde, phthalates, and coal tar as well as those with petroleum. Have a look at our range of Organic Hair Care; natural and environmentally friendly, they will leave your hair silky, nourished and smooth.

New Website to track Murray-Darling Basin

A new interactive website will be updated weekly to show water availability in public water storages across the Murray Darling Basin. The Minister for Climate Change and Water, Senator Penny Wong, announced that the website went live on April 23rd, and provides easily accessible information on water held in public storages right across the Murray-Darling Basin. Water managers, irrigators, community and environment groups, students and anyone else who is interested can click anywhere on the interactive map of the Basin to locate the data for that area. Solar Power Plant Site for Canberra

The ACT has identified several sites in the territory that could be suitable for its promised solar power plant and they will be announced next month when the tender process begins. The Government is offering a $30 million subsidy to build the plant and says it will need to produce at least 22 megawatts of energy, enough to supply ten thousand homes. The Government would like to take a modular approach, making sure that it is built within the ACT, so they can expand the plant in the future. Energy Minister Simon Corbell stated that he would like to make Canberra the solar capital and would like the territory to benefit from the economic and employment activity. Skills for the Carbon Challenge

The ACTU and the Australian Conservation Foundation have welcomed the Federal Government’s Skills for the Carbon Challenge plan which will provide $25.7 million to drive green skills and training development. A major report by the ACF and ACTU Green Gold Rush: How ambitious environmental policy can make Australia a leader in the global race for green jobs, shows that Australia is well-positioned to capitalise in six key and shows Australia has the potential to generate up to 500,000 additional green collar jobs by 2030 and multi-billion dollar export opportunities. Both organizations believe the Government’s initiative is a welcome step towards this goal and will be the start of a more ambitious long term plan for green collar job creation.
