Great item to make you think about energy usage

First off, this item can have more than one appliance hooked up by an adapter/extension board so long as the total amperage of the apliance does not exceed 10. The power is limited to 2400W which is much greater than what most appliances run at. I bought this item to monitor the power usage of various aquarium items running between 200-1500 watts. Because this device allows continuous running of appliances, it will add up the total power used by an appliance over time and multiply it by a given cost rate. For example if you have an appliance running at 1000W for 1 hr and you set the rate to 45c, the meter will show a total cost of 45c. Run the item for 2 hrs and it will show a total cost of 90c. The item does have the ability to set 2 different cost rates. This is useful if you have an appliance that costs a lot to run and you think the electricity cost will rise. You would set 1 rate to the current cost of electricity and the other to what it will rise too (subtract these and find out the additional cost of the item should the electricity rate rise). There were three main downsides to this item. The first is that this model (which is the older style pictured) does not have a backlight. The second was that it is oriented sideways, which can cause problems when placed in a 4 socket adapter (it will block off 1 of the power outlets). This was fixed in the newer model that is oriented upwards. Finally, for those that run the new smart meters you cannot set different rates for peak, shoulder and off peak times. This means you cannot calculate exactly how much the appliance will cost easily. If the power of the appliance changes throughout the day then it is impossible to calculate its true cost. You can however find out how many kwh it uses, which is still useful to know. Remember, the only way to really reduce your energy bill is to reduce your usage by turning off unnecessary items. Increasing power efficiency is a good idea but comes second to reducing your overall usage. This is one of the better and more accurate meters on the market and helped me understand my usage a lot better.
