What Are Waste Recycling Carbon Offsets?
|
The project reduces waste heading to domestic landfill sites. Landfill sites produce methane as the organic matter decomposes. One tonne of methane is equal to 21-23 tonnes of CO2, and waste recycling credits help reduce the amount of methane in the atmosphere.
Our waste recycling offset is sourced from the Australian Greenhouse Friendly (GF) Scheme, which is administered by the federal government's Greenhouse Office.

What Are The Benefits Of Waste Recycling?
|
- A massive 85% reduction in the amount of domestic waste sent to landfill.
- A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that exceeds national targets.
- Your waste recycling offsets will help fund the development and running of efficient recycling plants in local communities across Australia.
- Help to improve air, soil and water quality.
- Help reduce salinity & soil degradation.
- The elimination of leachate and other contaminants from landfill operations.
- Reduced water consumption through the ready supply of high quality composts and soil conditioners.
- A viable and sustainable long-term solution for the benefit of future generations

How Does The Program Work?
|
Organic matter from domestic bins in the Souther Metropolitan Municipality is collected and taken to a processing facility. The In-Vessel Composting Facility at the RRRC processes all collected household organic material and turns 85% of it into high quality compost.
Compost has many benefits. It increases the soil's organic content, puts back micro-organisms, preserves moisture and provides essential nutrients. It is the natural way of giving plants the nourishment they need to grow.
This compost will be used as an important tool in soil management that will enable the farming community to reduce their dependence on chemical fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation and result in cleaner, safer food, improved product quality and enhanced soil and water resources.
By converting what many consider as waste and delivering it to local farms, wineries, and market gardens, this innovative system returns a valuable resource to the community and ultimately the best produce to consumers.
