How Can I Make A Difference?

There are thousands of things you can do to live a more sustainable lifestyle. This guide offers you easy to do ideas to help reduce your environmental impact - and you can save money at the same time!

Water:

  • Don’t let your taps run. If you allow the water to run for three minutes while you clean your teeth, was your face or scrub your hands, approximately 15 litres of water goes down the sink.
  • If you have to wait a long time for your taps to produce hot water, put a bucket in the sink to catch the cold water, and feed it to your plants! Or take a look at the Hughie Water Saving Sink. Click here for more info..
  • Drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water, it tastes better, it’s better for you and much more environmentally friendly.
  • Fill your sink with water and wash the dishes instead of having the tap running. Using your dishwasher can be more efficient than washing the dishes yourself so make sure it is full before you press the on button.
  • The Every Drop Shower Saver lets you turn your shower on and off without losing temperature or pressure at the flick of your finger. It is so easy and can help you save water while you get all soapy! Click here for more info...

Energy Efficiency:

  • Change your computer/laptop settings. Set your screen to switch off after 5 minutes of in-activity (instead of using a screen saver) and your computer to go to sleep after 15 minutes of in-activity. If you are going to be away for longer than 30 minutes switch your computer off.
  • Charge your iPod from the wall socket, it uses much less energy.
  • When you are finished charging your phone, iPod, camera or any other portable device switch the plug off or pull out the charger. Leaving it in uses around 0.3 watts.
  • In summer use a fan as much as possible instead of air conditioning. Fans only use between 20 – 50 watts opposed to 2000 watts for air conditioners. Or turn down your air condition by 1 degree in winter and up by 1 degree in summer to reduced energy consumption by 15%
  • The average kettle uses around 2300 watts. Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need, boiling 2 cups takes on average 1 minute while filling the kettle takes about 4.5 minutes. So you save time and money.
  • The easiest way to stop leaving appliances on stand-by is with our remote control Powerboard. With this easy device you can turn appliances on and off at the plug by the simple click of a button! Click here for more info...

Around The House:

  • Avoid detergents with Phosphates. While most household detergents contain phosphates, they behave like fertilisers when they reach the environment. Phosphates encourage the build-up of alge in waterways. This is bad because it depletes oxygen from the water and destroys aquatic life.
  • Do not buy cleaning products sold in flammable spray cans. Spray cans emit damaging greenhouse gases in to the atmosphere, and a dangerous cocktail of chemicals into the air.
  • Try Organic Cotton Clothing. Cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops in the world. Because the cotton plant is easily infected with fungus and insects, chemicals are often used. Pesticides create serious health problems for the workers on the cotton farms, and long term effects on the health of the soil, in the process contaminating ground and surface water. Pesticide residue stays in the fabric after it has been manufactured, putting your health at risk whilst you wear it.
