Seeing as Australia is the driest inhabited continent water is not the most abundant resource. Keeping the garden looking green and beautiful is pretty tricky in our native conditions, but there are things you can do to have a great looking garden and save water as well.

Water Tanks:
|
Water Tanks are one of the best ways in which you can save water. There are water tanks to suit every home and every space from slimline tanks to underground tanks. Water tanks can be easily retrofitted to your gutters and you can use the water to water your garden 24/7 without restrictions.
Water tanks can also be plumbed into your home to provide water for your toilets, dishwasher and washing machine.
There are rebates available for water tank installations, so check with your council, state government or water authority. For example, Sydney water offers rebates of up to $1500 for water tank installations.

Greywater Systems:
|
Grey water is basically water that has been already used, from your dishwasher, washing machine or from your shower. The average home can create around 150,000L of grey water per year. There are simple ways to recycle grey water which will ensure the grass is always greener in your garden.
By installing a simple greywater diverter whenever you shower, do a load of washing or wash the dishes; the water will get filtered and then sent to water your garden. It is as easy as that!

Simple Tips For A Greener Garden:
|
- Leave your grass longer. The longer your grass the more water it retains. So try only cut your grass to around 4cm, which will keep it looking greener.
- Use water storage crystals for pots or garden beds to help keep water for longer.
- For garden beds and flower patches keep a mulch (or bark) over the soil to retain moisture.
- Plant native species, they are able to survive better in our weather conditions and attract birds.
- Only water your garden early in the morning or late in the evening to prevent evaporation.
- Use a bucket in the shower to collect the cold water before it gets hot. Then you can use the water to water your plants!
