The Cent-a-Meter is a great energy saving device that allows you to measure your entire homes energy usage and set a limit on energy usage as well to save you money. The Cent-a-Meter also allows you to isolate individual appliances to find out how much energy they use and cost.
The Cent-A-Meter measures domestic electricity use inside the home or small business and displays the cost per hour on an inexpensive and easy-to-read portable LCD display.
With a built in alarm which is activated when you go above your pre-set energy usage limit the Cent-a-Meter allows you to cap your energy usage. And finally, it can also provide an added safety measure. By checking your device before you leave home each day, you'll be able to tell whether you may have ''left anything hot on'', like an iron or heater because such appliances will give you a higher-than-normal reading on your Cent-A-Meter.
The Cent-A-Meter receiver computes the approximate power use energy cost and greenhouse gas generation and displays the results on the LCD screen. Consumers can input specific country currency and voltage, electricity tariff rate, greenhouse gas conversion factor and peak load alarm value.
Inventor Ross Halliwell says it is like a speedometer in that it measures ''in real time and in dollars (and cents) the electricity consumption at a given point in time''. The development of this real-time utility monitor provides consumers with instant feedback on the cost of operating appliances in the home and assists them to positively modify their behaviour.
In other words, it enables you to work out which appliances are costing you the most in energy terms, therefore, if you can switch them off during the night, you may be able to save money and even help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Ross says by gaining knowledge about the amount of power used, the consumer can make more informed decisions about energy efficient appliances, use of sustainable ''green power'' sources, reduction of stand-by power losses and re-scheduling of unnecessary consumption during peak load periods.
The monitoring of ambient comfort levels inside the home encourages efficient use of space heating and air-conditioning that are substantial energy users.
