Sustainability is an idea that has informed Simeon Glasson’s work as an architect for many years. His two-storey, five-bedroom duplex property in Bondi is a shining example of energy efficiency.



The house makes good use of natural light, supplemented by low energy LED downlights. Ceiling fans and cross-ventilation are used to cool the house in summer. Cooking, hot water and winter heating are all by gas. Prior to installing solar, energy usage was a mere 12 to 15kWh a day!

Todae installed the 1.5kW, 9-module system in January 2007. Since that time, it has generated almost 2.8 Megawatt hours of electricity! Further modifications to the property have helped reduce daily energy usage to just 8 kWh! With the system averaging 5.3 kWh a day, it now provides 66% of the household electricity.

Asked what he feels about his solar system, Simeon says, “I’m very pleased to know that most of my electricity is being generated sustainably. I also feel good about the fact that when electricity prices inevitably start to rise, I’ll be protected from the worst effects.”

Summing up the merits of his solar system, Simeon said, “I have a young daughter and I fear for her future in a world devastated by climate change. Being able to make this small contribution gives me hope that other people will do the same and help ensure all children inherit a world worth living in.
