Kathy Prokhovnik and Martin Ryman – Leichhardt, Sydney
“People stop to ask us how solar is working out for us. We say we won’t be paying for electricity anymore.”
Kathy and Martin live in a three-bedroom Victorian terrace in Leichhardt in Sydney’s Inner West. When asked what motivated them to finally install solar, the couple said, “We feel that change needs to be made at grass roots level. If everyone starts doing something now, government and industry will eventually have to follow.”
Making the decision to go solar was easy, say Kathy Prokhovnik and Martin Ryman: “We used to look at all the sunshine drenching our roof every day and think ‘what a waste!’”
Todae installed the 9-module system in October 2007. Six months later it has generated 980kW. With their 1.5kW system capable of generating 7kW or more a day, Kathy and Martin were keen to make changes to reduce their usage: “We’ve swapped many of our halogen downlights to compact fluoros and have started turning appliances off at the wall. We’ve also become aware of the peak electricity period and try to gear our usage around this where we can. Previously the daily household energy usage was 8kWh a day. Now it’s down to 5kW a day and so far the solar system has produced 10% more energy than they’ve used.
Both say that the experience of installing solar has made them more conscious of using energy: “We feel much more informed and more connected to what it means to use energy. We’re careful now about what we use and whether we really need to use it at all. It’s also made us less tolerant of the current power infrastructure in this country. Something needs to be done.”
Martin summed up by saying, “People walk by our house and look at the inverter whirring away. Some stop to ask us how solar is working out for us. We say we won’t be paying for electricity anymore.”
