Change your Perspective - 1 day a month

After great success and feedback from "The Plastic Diet" we have decided to implement a community based day every month that aims to generate awareness around our actions and get people talking. We have decided to call it the “Todae Monthly Eco-Challenge”

The idea is to have a different challenge every month that only lasts for one day, without being too taxing or compromising, but that will still make a significant difference if everyone gets involved. It will occur on the 1st day of every month to make it easy to remember the date. We would love to get your ideas on what you think may be effective and fun. Please send your ideas to thoughts@todae.com.au

Todae Monthly Eco Challenge 2, May 1st 2009 – Go Meat Free

On Friday May 1st we are encouraging you to have a Meat free day.
We know that many people love their meat and would find it difficult to live without, so we are suggesting that you go for just one day without any type of meat (or fish). If you are brave enough and up for the challenge, why not try this exercise for one week.

The purpose of this exercise is to achieve the following outcomes:

  • To create awareness of the effect of our diets on the planet
  • To create awareness of the effect of our diets on other species
  • To reduce our personal carbon emissions (for at least a day)
  • To educate those around us.

Following are some quick facts on effects of what we eat. These are taken from a presentation called “Food and Etchics” done by Danin Kahn in November 08. To download the presentation click here.

  • 38% of the world’s grain is fed to farmed animals
  • It takes 10kg of feed to produce 1kg Beef
  • It takes 18,000 litres of Water to produce 1kg Beef
  • Most food is grown with the aid of Fossil Fuels (nitrogen fertilisers)

We encourage you to do this exercise with friends and family and get them involved as well. This will make it easier, more fun and the more people that do it, the more impact it will have.

We also encourage you to write to us telling about your experience so we can share it with others.

Good luck,

Danin & The Todae Team
